Fire stopping

Essential fire stopping techniques for building safety.

Fire stopping can be defined as the sealing of any opening to prevent fire, smoke and heat from passing through building compartments. The spread of fire, smoke and heat can be contained by creating fire resistant compartments which segment a building both vertically and horizontally. It is essential that buildings implement fire-stopping to restrict fire spread.

Minimising fire damage with expert partition installations.

Fire partitioning is the process when constructing a building to ensure fire safety by preventing fire spread. They are internal walls, and ceilings which ensure that a fire, for a limited time, will only be contained in that room or area of the building. This ensures that people within the building have enough time to find escape routes, as well as potentially causing minimal damage to the establishment as only a certain area is affected.

Any and every fire starts small and grows. If combustible materials and oxygen are available with no physical barriers, it will attack the structure of the initial room it was caused in and spread. A fire-rated partition prevents this by creating a containment which ensures the fire cannot spread for a certain period of time. Partition times can range from 30 to 240+ minutes, ensuring the safety of the people in the building.

There are two main types of fire partitions available: vertical and horizontal. We highly recommends considering both options, as they serve the same purpose but in different facets of the building.

Vertical partitions are placed vertically within the walls of the building. These act as a fire resistance which prevents fires from spreading in between rooms through burning through combustibles materials such as plasterboard. These partitions create significant fire resistance containing the fire within the original room.

The vast majority of partition walls contain interruptions, usually for things like pipes and electricity sockets. These interruptions are classed as “weak-spots” when it comes to fire resistance. It is recommended to install penetration seals to strengthen these weaker places in the partition.

We’re very experienced in installing vertical partitions, however, please be aware that in some buildings the existing walls may need upgrading in order to meet the standards of government regulations.
